As we approached the ship we soon realize it is a pre-tech cruiser. Closer we see that there is only one life source. The Harpy is hailed and we speak with Niles, a relic of pre-scream. We are able to convince him to allow us onto his ship, unsure of what we’ll find on board.
What we find is an AI just as unsure about us as we were of him. Well no, that’s not true. He probably thought we were pirates. Everyone else was sure that he was Maltech going to snap and space us all. Anyways Niles was very helpful providing me with a layout of the ship as well as creating a lit path to the life source. He even had an android body that he could us which was breath taking! I didn’t really have a chance to closely examine it but I could tell by just looking it over it was a prestige example of pre-tech.
He lead us to a room filled with cryostasis pod, though only one with occupied. Niles told us the man had been put in there a year before the Scream due to a serious illness. Also he was a psychic. The pod was opened and the man was knocked out so that he could be taken to the medbay for a full physical of what condition he was in.
The man regained consciousness while Kairi was looking over him. Kiki was freaking out saying something was wrong with him. Looking back I should have listened. I thought he was disoriented, surrounded by people he didn’t know. I was sure Kairi yelling at me wasn’t helping the situation either. Drake had to pull me away. I’m glad he did. Things in the room began to float, pulsate almost.
A fight ensued. I didn’t want to kill him, I thought maybe he could be saved. Again I thought wrong. I seem to be doing that a lot today. I tried to talk to Niles worried that he would defend his Captain, the last remaining person of his original crew. He didn’t. As I moved into the room to try and find something to knock him out with my eyes began to burn. I have never felt so much pain in my life. And then it was over, the man was dead but my eyes. Joseph’s eyes. It took a long moment for us to even begin to recover.
As soon as I in more of a shape to talk Dorian asked me what I had meant when I said I could save him. I told him it was a miscalculation. The fact is yes he could have been saved but he would have been in a vegetative state. Even if my words hadn’t fallen on deaf ears I wasn’t going to subjugate that man to that.
Niles joined us back on the Harpy so that we could gather supplies from Paradise to repair his ship. Dorian approached me and spoke with me about what had happened, I had after all tried to ignore orders from him. This whole day has left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
